Frequently asked questions
The questions we get on the phone, answered plainly. If yours is not here, call the ranch — (214) 202-1855.
How much is a half cow at Lost Valley Beef?
$2,500 for approximately 225 lbs of packaged beef, which works out to about $11.11 a pound for every cut on the animal. That is estimated from an approximately 375 lb hanging weight.
How much is a whole cow?
$5,000 for approximately 450 lbs of packaged beef, from an approximately 750 lb hanging weight — about $11.11 a pound.
Do you sell quarters?
Yes. A quarter is $1,350 for approximately 112 lbs of packaged beef.
Is your beef grass-fed?
Our cattle are raised on grass in the Lost Valley and grain-finished at the end, which is what builds the marbling. We say grain-finished rather than hiding behind grass-fed, because nearly all beef is grass-fed for most of the animal's life.
Where is the beef processed?
American Butchery in Mineral Wells. You fill out the cut sheet, and we will walk you through it if it is your first time.
How long does it take from ordering to pickup?
It depends where we are in the season — sometimes beef is ready within a couple of weeks, sometimes you are reserving an animal that finishes later. Call (214) 202-1855 for the current honest answer.
Do you deliver?
We deliver around our part of North Texas — Jacksboro, Perrin, Graham, Bridgeport, Decatur, Mineral Wells, Weatherford, Bowie, Azle, Springtown, Boyd, Chico and out to Fort Worth. Ranch pickup in Jack County is always available by appointment.
Where do I pick up?
7072 US-281 South, Jacksboro, TX 76458, on US-281 South between Perrin and Jacksboro. Pickup is by appointment — this is a working ranch, so call ahead.
How much freezer space will I need?
About 3–4 cubic feet for a quarter, 6–8 for a half, and 13–16 for a whole. A half beef needs a dedicated freezer, not room in the one over your refrigerator.
How long will the beef keep?
Vacuum-sealed and held at 0°F, steaks and roasts hold their quality comfortably for a year or more and ground beef for around a year. Frozen beef stays safe indefinitely at 0°F — what degrades is quality, and vacuum sealing is what protects it.
Can I choose how it is cut?
Yes, that is the whole point. You fill out a cut sheet: steak thickness, packages per pack, roast sizes, how much to grind, what to do with the brisket and the bones.
Why is there no online checkout?
Because beef sold by the animal is not a warehouse product. Availability depends on which cattle have finished, the final weight varies, and the cut sheet is a conversation. A phone call gets you a real answer instead of a shopping cart error.
Do you take a deposit?
Call (214) 202-1855 and we will walk you through how reserving and payment work for the animal you want.
Can I visit the ranch?
Yes, by appointment. Call ahead so somebody is there to meet you.
